Huapai residents have an exciting range of outdoor activities on their doorstep. With the choice of thermal pools, skydiving, horse riding, and mountain biking; to surfing and fishing on some of Auckland’s most famous black sand beaches; Huapai homeowners have a wide range of options when it comes to enjoying the great outdoors.
The wild, West Coast beaches of Muriwai, Piha, and Bethels are readily accessible from Huapai - being just ten minutes drive from the end of the North Western Motorway. The Gannet Colony is popular as one of the greatest attractions at Muriwai Beach. From August to March each year you can either watch the busy comings and goings of the gannets, learn to surf at the Muriwai surf school, or alternatively take in the bracing sea air and roam the dramatic cliff tops on a variety of bush walks.
Nearby Woodhill Forest Park covers an awe-inspiring 12,500 hectares, and has over 100 kilometres of purpose-built tracks and jumps amongst the forest for mountain bikers. There is a popular tree-tops adventure park, with 18 high wire confidence courses and flying foxes, as well as opportunities for 4WD jeep safaris, motocross adventures, quad biking, or guided horse riding treks. Biking the lesser known trails amongst the pines of Riverhead Forest, or visiting the Kauri Gum Country Store & Cafe, are other popular alternatives for weekend adventure seekers.
North of Huapai, a day trip to Helensville is well worth the visit, where visitors can enjoy a cruise on the Kaipara Harbour, soak and relax in the natural thermal pools at Parakai, or attempt a tandem skydive with spectacular views over the harbour.
Schooling
Huapai residents are well positioned to take advantage of the four first-rate primary schools within the surrounding district. From the nearby decile 10 Huapai District School, which offers a Montessori pedagogy & curriculum, to Waimauku School, Riverhead School, and Taupaki School - all within a radius of 8 kilometres - residents have a good choice of primary school options for their children.
Residents also have the choice of four secondary schools in the Huapai-Kumeu area. Massey High School is a state run, co-educational secondary school that has experienced significant roll growth over the past few years. Now being the 12th largest school in New Zealand, it boasts a Performing Arts Centre which has quickly become the foremost music venue in West Auckland, a successful multi-sports programme within its renowned Sports Academy, and a bilingual unit with instruction taught in both English and Te Reo Māori.
St Dominic's College is a Catholic school for girls from Years 7-13, situated 16 kilometres south of Huapai in West Auckland. The college provides a holistic education, based on Catholic values, while emphasising excellence in academic learning, personal development, and involvement in the community.
Nearby Liston College is a Catholic boys school for Years 7-13. Established in 1974, with a proud reputation for academic excellence and sporting achievement, it is committed to providing learning opportunities which enable students to fulfil their potential.
22 kilometres north of Huapai at Helensville, Kaipara College is a small, co-educational school that focuses on providing a high quality environment for its students. With a roll of 550 students in Years 9 to 13, the college emphasises a balanced programme that provides for academic excellence alongside strong sporting and cultural involvement. The college boasts an impressive range of science laboratories, an art studio, music suite, drama room, library, computer laboratories & technology workshops, as well as a swimming pool and gymnasium. Students come from a wide catchment area, from Riverhead, Kumeu, and Huapai in the south to Glorit and Puatahi in the North, as well as the country districts in between.
Shopping
Just 12 minutes drive south of Huapai, the expansion of one of Auckland’s largest commercial and retail town centres at Westgate, on Lincoln Road at the northern tip of Auckland's North-Western motorway, continues to proceed at a pace. With large format retail stores including Mitre 10, Palmers, Pak'n'Save, Farmers, The Warehouse, Harvey Norman, Briscoes, Rebel Sport, Freedom Furniture, Warehouse Stationery, and Hunter Furniture, Huapai residents have an amazing range of choice when it comes to shopping for their favourite items. There are 8 Hoyts Cinemas in both 2D & 3D, a ten pin bowling alley and mini golf, and a choice of food halls that offer a variety of cuisines, including Indian, Thai, Malaysian, and Vietnamese.
The Westgate town centre will, on completion, offer 5000 new houses and apartments, a series of parks, a vibrant mix of specialty shopping amongst several new shopping malls and retail centres, banks, offices, a sizeable public library, and a new town square. There is ample parking and good public transport links.
Public Transport
Huapai residents can take advantage of frequent bus services operating along State Highway 16 from Huapai to Westgate town centre, which then connect onwards to the CBD. There are also regular North Shore bus connections commencing at the Westgate town centre hub and interchange. The direct busway route from Huapai to downtown covers a total distance of 26 kilometres, with most operated on the north western motorway for the first 18 kilometres, then along bus lanes on the arterial roads for the final 8 kilometres.
Other Features
Being in the heart of Auckland’s historic wine country, Huapai residents have access to a variety of relaxing wine trails that cross the region. Huapai is within easy reach of 16 regional wineries, including Kumeu River, Matua Valley, Coopers Creek, Soljans Estate, Nobilo, Babich, Westbrook Estate, and Awa Valley. Soljans Cafe offers the opportunity to indulge in a causal setting of Mediterranean style food, with the cafe having been voted as one of the top twenty winery restaurants in the world. Meanwhile, Coopers Creek hosts a well attended series of jazz music events every Sunday during the Summer period.
